Located in Washington, D.C., Gallaudet University is a world leader in liberal education and career development for Deaf and Hard of Hearing undergraduate students. The University’s Laurent Clerc National Deaf Education Center serves Deaf and Hard of Hearing children at its two demonstration schools and throughout the nation by developing, implementing, and disseminating innovative educational strategies.
Most recently, Vcom3D and the Clerc Center collaborated on an NSF-funded Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) project entitled "Life-like, Expressive Avatars for the Instruction of Young Deaf Learners." For this project, the partners documented how teachers use facial expressions, variations of signing style, "body language", and other methods to engage the students and promote understanding of the reading material in order to create a system for creating animated stories and related instructional material in American Sign Language.
Currently, Vcom3D and the Clerc Center are collaborating on a U.S. Department of Education-funded SBIR Phase II project entitled "Mobile Language Reference Tools for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing K-12 Students". We are developing and evaluating an exemplar American Sign Language and Signed English dictionary for handheld computer and media player devices (like Apple's iPod and Touch). The dictionary will include signed animations of English terms that can be difficult for Deaf learners to master, including idioms, scientific terms, and multi-sense words. The Mobile Language Reference will provide mobility and independence that leads to opportunity-based learning - in classrooms, on field trips, or while reading a book anytime, anywhere.
Since 2000, Vcom3D has collaborated with TERC, a Cambridge, Massachusetts-based educational research organization, to develop innovative technology-based educational materials for K-12 students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. In our first collaboration, TERC and Vcom3D added SigningAvatar character animations to interactive science units for upper elementary and middle school students.
